National Youth Week
On Friday April 17th National Youth Week was celebrated at the Rainbow P-12 College when Nkandu Beltz gave a presentation to the Year 9-10 students. Nkandu, who lives in Horsham, is the author of “I Have The Power”.
Nkandu’s presentation was titled “It Starts With Us”. She started off by speaking of her childhood in Zambia and the lessons she learnt from her father. Young people represent 60% of the population in Commonwealth countries, they are the future. It is important for them to find other young people with similar ideas and visions – Find Your Tribe.
Nkandu then spoke of her work in the Kununurra community in Western Australia and the setting up of the Kununurra Youth Development Program. This program started as an idea with no money, no team and no business plan. After being knocked back by the local council she went directly to the state government and received funding for the program.
Nkandu gave the students food for thought with her quotations. These included, “Many people are talented, yet few distinguish themselves. The ability to rise above others lies in effort rather than talent” and “If you do not love yourself, others will not love you.”
Her motto for life is, “I want to inspire people. I want someone to look at me and say because of you I didn’t give up.”
The students then made up a banner representing their thoughts on National Youth Week. This was followed by a morning tea where the students were able to speak one on one with Nkandu. The students who participated in the event were full of praise for Nkandu’s inspirational talk.
